Weekly Pre-Camp Emails

Week 7: May 15, 2025 – Keeping in Touch While Your Camper is at CBM

Dear Camp Barney Families,

With just a few weeks to go until opening day, the energy at Camp Barney Medintz is starting to build. The lakes are sparkling, the cabins are being prepared, and the first signs of summer are settling in. We can’t wait to welcome your campers into the magic that’s beginning to take shape. As we approach opening day, we want to thank you for being such wonderful partners. Your trust and support make this extraordinary experience possible.

Staying Connected

While your campers are immersed in the joy and adventure of camp, we’re committed to keeping you in the loop and helping you feel connected to their experience. Here’s what to expect:

  • On arrival day, you’ll receive an email once all campers have safely arrived.
  • On the first full day of camp, we’ll send an email with your camper’s cabin number.
  • Every Friday, you’ll get a weekly update sharing highlights and happenings from across Camp Barney.

Mail and Emails

Campers love receiving letters, and we encourage you to send traditional “snail mail” throughout the session. You can also send CampStamp emails via the Campanion app on your phone or your CampInTouch account as often as you like. Emails are printed and delivered Sunday through Friday during Rest Hour. Messages received after 10:00 am will be delivered the following day.

New this year: When sending a CampStamp email, you can now request a handwritten eLetter reply from your camper. Your child will receive a special piece of stationery with a barcode linked to your email. If they choose to write back, their scanned letter will be delivered to you via email or viewable in Campanion or CampInTouch. Please note: selecting this option does not guarantee a response, but we’ve made it easier than ever for campers to write home.

Campers are not required to write letters, but they can always request blank stationery from their counselors during Rest Hour. These scanned notes will be sent home Sunday through Thursday via email or viewable in Campanion or CampInTouch.

Photos from the Week

We know how special it is to catch a glimpse of your child enjoying camp life! That’s why we upload photos at least four times each week to the Campanion app. To make the most of it:

  • Be sure you’ve downloaded the Campanion app to your phone.
  • Upload a clear, current photo of your camper to enable facial recognition.
  • While we can’t promise photos of every child in every upload, our team works hard to capture a wide range of activities and moments.

Reminder: No Packages, Please

At Camp Barney Medintz, we have a no package policy to help ensure the health, safety, and fairness of the camp experience. Please share this policy with friends, grandparents, and other family members to help avoid confusion. If your child urgently needs an essential item, you must email summer@campbarney.org for approval before sending. A list of acceptable essential items can be found in the Parent Handbook (page 23). All approved packages will be opened by office staff upon arrival.

Please note:

  • Unapproved items will not be returned and will be donated locally in White County.
  • DoorDash and other independent delivery services are not permitted at camp.

Whether you see a smiling face in a photo, read a letter home, or receive an update from us, we hope you’ll feel the joy and growth that happens here every day. Campers will return home more confident, more independent, and filled with unforgettable memories and lifelong friendships.

We’re counting down the days!

Week 6: May 8, 2025 – Confidence, Independence & Friendship for a Lifetime

Dear Camp Barney Medintz Families,

As we get closer to the best summer ever, we want to share more about what truly makes Camp Barney Medintz such a powerful and transformative experience for your camper.

We have an expansive campus, adventure-filled days, and amazing activities—what is really important is that campersgrow into the best versions of themselves at Camp Barney Medintz. It’s where they build confidence, gain independence, and form social connections that last a lifetime.

The Foundation for Jewish Camp’s (FJC) Character at Camp Survey, which asked CBM campers, staff, and parents to reflect on their CBM experience, confirms what we very intentionally cultivate each summer: Camp Barney Medintz changes lives.

Confidence That Sticks

Campers try new things every day at CBM—sometimes without even realizing it. Whether it’s hiking a new trail, performing in front of their friends, or offering encouragement during a group activity, these moments build confidence that follows them home. In fact, 81% of our campers said camp helped them challenge themselves to improve and learn how to get along better with others. That’s the power of stepping outside your comfort zone in a place where you feel supported and safe.

Growing Independence, One Day at a Time

One of the most meaningful outcomes of a summer at CBM is watching campers grow more independent. From managing their belongings to solving problems and navigating social dynamics, every day at camp helps kids build real-world skills. Nearly 8 out of 10 of campers reported that camp helped them become more independent this summer—and that growth is something families often tell us they notice immediately when their camper returns home.

Real Friendships, Real Community

At Camp Barney Medintz, friendships go deeper than just shared interests—they’re rooted in shared experiences, late-night laughs, and being there for each other. 90% of campers say they feel a sense of belonging, and 87% say camp is one of their favorite places to be. Our campers also told us that there are staff at camp who truly care about them—something we take enormous pride in cultivating. From the youngest cabins to Teen Village, our camp community is a place where everyone is valued and included.

What Parents Value

Our campers aren’t the only ones who notice the impact. According to the FJC survey, 99% of parents report that camp helps their child develop character. Parents identified social intelligence, respect, teamwork, and responsibility as the most important traits for camp to foster—skills that show up in everything from cabin dynamics to Color War.

These outcomes aren’t accidental—they’re the result of intentional programming, thoughtful leadership, and a community built on care, trust, and joy. We work year-round to make camp a place where your child can grow into themselves with confidence and connection. We can’t wait to watch your camper thrive this summer!

Week 5: May 1, 2025 – Activities & Special Events: Bring on the FUN!

Dear Camp Barney Medintz Families,

Today we join Jews around the world in celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day—a reminder of the spirit of resilience, community, and joy that we proudly bring to life at camp every day.

At Camp Barney Medintz, we believe summer should be filled with fun, growth, and unforgettable memories, and we are intentional in structuring our activities, trips, and special events to deliver just that! Whether your camper is a first-timer or long-timer, every summer brings incredible new opportunities to play, explore, connect, and shine.

Daily Adventures & Signature Activities

Every day is packed with excitement at CBM, thanks to our extensive and diverse activity offerings. Campers together with their cabinmates enjoy camp favorites like:

  • Swimming & lake activities (including tubing!)
  • Campouts & cookouts under the stars and nature activities
  • Music, dance, theater & crafts
  • Field and court sports, and more!

Each summer brings new opportunities, with campers progressing through a thoughtfully designed activity sequence that grows with them. With each subsequent summer, campers can look forward to things like:

  • Leading Shabbat services
  • Technical climbing wall and vertical challenge course
  • Videography, horseback riding, mountain biking, scuba diving, and zip lining
  • Unit trips, including water skiing and hiking the Appalachian Trail
  • And of course… Alufim 3-Day and the JIT 6-Day adventure!

Camper Choice

Campers in 5th–7th grades participate in Chugim—choice-based activities that meet multiple times during their session. These might include music, sports, arts, and other specialty options that allow campers to dive deeper into their interests. Teen Village campers enjoy dedicated supervised free play sessions, giving them more time to do what they love and connect with friends from across camp.

Special Events That Bring the Magic

Some of our most treasured memories are made during our camp-wide special events:

  • Color War surprises campers with an epic “break” at dawn and brings the entire camp together with a high-energy, four-team competition. It all builds to a spirited raft relay race filled with ruach, pride, and unforgettable fun.
  • Barneyroo is our own summer festival! Campers visit themed booths featuring face painting, crafts, fortune telling, sand art, and more—plus a hilarious staff performance that everyone looks forward to.
  • Israel Day, led by our Israeli staff, brings Israeli culture to life through food, music, art, dance, and hands-on activities. It’s an inspiring day filled with pride and community.
  • The Camp Musical is a highlight for our 4-week campers who love the stage. From auditions to opening night, performers rehearse throughout the session before putting on a show that brings the whole camp together.

Jewish Activities at CBM

Jewish values, traditions, and culture are woven into everyday life at CBM—from singing blessings in the Dining Hall to celebrating Shabbat under the stars in the Zaban Chapel. With guidance from the MJCCA’s Center for Jewish Experiential Education Director, Kelly Cohen, we’ve enhanced Jewish programming and created meaningful ways for campers to connect more deeply to their identity and community—something that feels more important than ever in today’s world.

NEW for Summer 2025: CBM Sports Training

For campers in grades 6–9 who want to stay game-ready this summer, our CBM Sports Training program offers twice-weekly Rest Hour sessions focused on soccer, basketball, tennis, and volleyball. Led by experienced staff, these small-group workouts are a great way to keep skills sharp—without missing out on any camp fun. Spots are limited, and registration is available now in CampinTouch in your Parent Dashboard.

Summer is coming, and we can’t wait to fill it with fun, friendship, and adventure!

Week 3: April 17, 2025 – Character at Camp Barney Medintz

Dear CBM Families,

At Camp Barney Medintz, our core values are at the heart of everything we do and drive our purpose in planning transformative summers in which both campers and staff thrive. Every summer, we see how powerful it is when our campers live these values —how they grow more confident, compassionate, and connected.

These six Camp Barney values guide our camp community each and every day:

  • Community – A sense of belonging like nowhere else. Campers learn that we are better together and responsible for one another.
  • Jewish Identity – Pride in who they are, as Jewish values and traditions are woven into the rhythm of camp life.
  • Self-Discovery – The space and encouragement to try new things, face challenges, and discover what they’re capable of.
  • Joy – Because happiness is essential to growth. Campers laugh, play, and celebrate together every day.
  • Integrity – Doing the right thing, even when no one’s watching. We empower campers to lead with kindness and courage.
  • Making a Positive Difference – Whether through big actions or small gestures, campers are taught that they have the power to change the world around them.

The Foundation for Jewish Camp (FJC) asked our campers and staff to reflect on this past summer and their responses to the FJC Character at Camp Survey are inspiring. We learned that:

  • 90% of campers say they feel a sense of belonging at camp.
  • 87% say camp is one of their favorite places to be.
  • 99% of parents believe camp helps their child develop character.
  • 93% of campers said they felt safe and included in their cabins.
  • 92% of staff felt confident they could identify and support a camper who might be struggling.

As we look ahead to Summer 2025, we are filled with pride knowing that these values will once again come to life across our campus. They help us inspire mensches, build lasting friendships, and ensure that each child returns home stronger, more joyful, and proud of their Jewish identity.

We can’t wait to welcome your camper to a summer where values are lived, loved, and shared.

Week 2: April 10, 2025 – Celebrating Passover & Jewish Life at Camp Barney

Dear Camp Barney Medintz Families,

As we ready our hearts and homes for Passover, we wish you and your family a meaningful holiday filled with connection, tradition, and joy. In a few days, we will gather around the Seder table, celebrating community, resilience, and freedom—values that resonate more deeply than ever this year. It’s especially meaningful to know that in just a few months, our camp community will come together to embrace our shared Jewish identity every single day.

Jewish life is woven into the everyday magic of CBM. Whether it’s singing and dancing to a favorite Hebrew song, reciting the blessing after a meal in the dining hall, or gathering for a peaceful Shabbat under the stars, our Jewish values are the heartbeat of camp.

Jewish Life at Camp Barney Medintz

Our campers experience Jewish culture, tradition, and identity in a way that is joyful, inclusive, and deeply meaningful.

  • Shabbat at Camp is truly something memorable, starting with campers dressing up for dinner. Then the whole camp community joins together in the Zaban Chapel to sing, pray, sway, and hug. On Saturday morning, we come together again for special Onegs and we conclude Shabbat with Havdalah and thoughtful reflections and ruach (spirit)!
  • Music, Hebrew, and Israeli Culture infuse the camp experience—from daily song sessions to fun Hebrew words woven into everyday camp life. Our Israeli mishlachat (delegation) brings Israel to life for campers every day in meaningful and engaging ways. Creative Jewish programming helps campers explore their identity and traditions in a setting filled with friendship, joy, and discovery.
  • Israel Day is led by our beloved Israeli staff members who passionately share Israeli culture, sports, music, food, and art. Campers are transported as they taste Israeli food, enjoy song and dance sessions, and so much more. It’s moving to be part of a sea of blue and celebrate Israel in such a special way.
  • Jewish Values like kehillah (community), chesed (kindness), and ruach (spirit) guide the way we treat one another and build a culture of respect, inclusion, and care.

As we gather for Passover and tell the story of our journey to freedom, we’re reminded that every camper at CBM is on their own journey—discovering who they are, building confidence, and connecting more deeply to their Jewish identity.

We are honored to be a part of that journey with your family.

Wishing you a sweet and meaningful Passover and a peaceful Shabbat.

Chag Sameach & Shabbat Shalom,
Danny & The Camp Barney Medintz Team
